Aminu Kano and Integrity

Mallam Aminu Kano after the 1966 counter coup was a minister in the Gen. Yakubu Gowon's Military Government. Gowon trusted and often relied on his wisdom when confronted with a herculean decision making task on a tricky political matter. This attracted a lot of jealousy from other politicians serving in the same government. So they plotted to bring him down by souring the pupil master relationship between Gowon and Mallam Aminu Kano. As part of the plot they conspired to go to his house and gave him 25 thousand pounds Sterling. He naturally asked what was the money about. Their leader responded and told him it's his share of the proceeds of a contract already executed for less of the contract sum. So they decided since it's a festival occasion, the amount might help the ministers take care of some urgent personal financial matters. Mallam collected the money but did what was the best right thing to do at that moment and forgot about the matter. The...

PROMOTE NOTHING BUT PEACE

“Everyone must be committed in the matter of peace; to do everything that they can ....Peace is the language we must speak.” — Pope Francis With the increasing spread of social media, the barriers to sharing contents about politics, current events, social events and religious philosophies have decreased considerably.   The social media is especially popular among youths, offering an opportunity to engage a population segment that has, traditionally, shown lower levels of political and civic engagement. In advance countries where people do things based on integrity, love for humanity and/or fear of the spiritual being, a church/mosque would be literally empty when the Pastor/Imam preaches anything other than a peaceful coexistence. Employees would close a company down; students would close down their schools when Managements dare to speak ill against a specific section especially the minority. Unfortunately here, you would be celebrated and be crowned a role model for being...

Student, 24, set to become MP after campaigning on bicycle

Image
A 24-year-old independent candidate is poised to become Igembe South MP if current tallies are anything to go by. John Mwirigi, who carried out campaigns on a bicycle, currently has 18,986 votes against Jubilee's Joseph Miriti who has 15,724. "We decided to elect him. He had no money for campaigns but he offered good pledges and his manifesto was good," a resident told The Star. Mwirigi is still a student at Mount Kenya University. He may be one of the youngest legislators in the next Parliament Tallying of results countrywide has been underway since most polling stations closed at 5pm on Tuesday. IEBC chair Wafula Chebukati said results being streamed are not final amid claims by the NASA coalition that the agency's system was hacked. The electoral agency said final results are being collated from forms 34A and 34B. By 9am today, it had received 28,000 out of the 40,883 form 3As across the country, which can be accessed on its online po...

Youth Need a change in strategy

Good Leadership isn't necessarily about age. In my life-time, I have seen a governor of 40 years who can't afford to do anything for his people, not to talk about paying salaries. I have seen a governor who is as old as an ancestor doing amazingly great. I have seen countries where youth talk about issues and discuss solutions. Where citizens compete to make positive impact or footprint. They believe the problem for one is nothing but a problem to an entire humanity. On the other hand, I have seen young boys and girls with massive talents/gifts competing to be newscaster or announcers on topics they believe will undermine a person, region, religion or one funny political party.  Many people can argue that poverty is thr major driving force of the problems faced today by the youth especially in developing nations. Although they can't connect how a politician uses them for his selfish interest; How they can destroy their very own communities by burning ...

Speak against Evil

The mind of man is so predicting that we automatically see our tribesmen, religious brothers and those we share something in common as always right. Only few conscientized people can differentiate between right and wrong especially in a nepotic society. For example having a Fulani person to admit that enough is enough for the senseless killings by the herdsmen; a Niger Deltan to condemn the atrocities and mayhem unleashed on the National wealth by the militants. I was once a ... victim to have thought that a typical Northerner can never be among the Boko boys, convincing my judgment that the boys were all from neighboring countries. I was indeed so wrong! What is wrong is forever wrong, no matter who the perpetrators are. It takes guts to stand for truth and justice. And not fighting against it, not speaking against it and supporting it makes one a coward. The senseless killings of hundreds of innocent souls and destruction of properties worth millions of Naira over cows o...

PMB and Mrs. PMB's Statements

I had actually not wanted to comment on the First family affair. I thought a family business should be discussed within the realm of the house, but in situation where pants are washed outside, the public has every right to tell where they have not been rinsed well. The most interesting part is seeing how the youth critically take their time to analyse the whole incident. One would say some of them must have gone through each page of the Nigerian constitution but in some cases ... , one wonders if some were thinking through their “yansh” Waking up every morning for days and realizing the same thing trending on social media would break one’s heart. One would hope to log in and see youth discussing issues like - “way out of recession; how to end terrorism; drug abuse among youths especially in Northern Nigeria; rate of kidnappings and other unfortunate calamities needing urgent discuss. However, I’m not ignoring the fact that what’s happening between the Buharis requires our obse...
