Is Marriage a Contract in Islam? (Shin Aure Kwangila ne a Musulunci?) Lately, a sister posted online that “marriage is a contract in Islam.” Some people agreed, but others became angry, saying marriage (aure) is not a contract (kwangila) but a sacred act of worship. To clear the confusion, let us look carefully at what Islamic teachings say — from the Qur’an, Hadith, and opinions of scholars. The truth is this: Aure a Musulunci kwangila ne — amma kwangila ce mai tsarki da daraja. 1. Marriage in Islam Is a Contract (Aure Kwangila ne) In Shari’a, marriage — Nikāh — is first a contract (ʿaqd) between a man (namiji) and a woman (mace). It is an agreement that sets out the rights (hakki) and duties (alhaki) of both partners.
